Cottonwood has been called the "Gateway to Tucson" and is home to several major universities including University of Phoenix, Southern Arizona University and Arizona State University. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cottonwood were traders in 1827 who named it after cottonwoods found near their trading post on the eastern edge of Tucson. In 1868, Cottonwood became part of Apache County when that area was divided between Arizona Territory and New Mexico Territory. In 1912, John Wesley Powell explored the Athabasca River Valley in present-day Cottonwood on his trip through that region for US Geological Survey Surveys looking for new routes through those mountains into North America. He named one creek Powell's Fork after General George Armstrong Custer who had died during an Indian battle two years earlier at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument east of Apache Junction in Cochise County, Nevada. In 1916 as part of a military buildup along the border with Mexico City Mayor Harry Chandler proposed building a munitions plant just outside town limits on Lots 12 & 13 Railroad Avenue which would have produced munitions for World War I but did not get built due to lack of funding from the US government. In 1922 construction began on what would become known as Chavez Air Force Base which would remain an important military installation until 2009 when it was closed due to budget cuts by then President George W Bush Sr.'s administration). Chavez Air Force Base came into being when Republic Airways Corporation (now Delta Airlines) leased land adjacent to Mesa Airport north of downtown Phoenix in order to build an airport thereon with hangars and other facilities used by both airlines as well as storage areas for aircraft while they were being assembled or stored during their long journey from assembly line yards around Phoenix..
