By the late 1980s, cottonwood had all but disappeared from Arizona's landscape. However, recent research has shown that cottonwood is still present withinArizona’s history and culture. For example, one recent study found that cottonwoods are still being used in traditional Native American ceremonies throughout Arizona’s region. Additionally, local farmers continue to harvest cottonwoods for their lumber products which continuesto support this community today
Cottonwood is a town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is located east of Apache Junction on the White Mountains of Arizona. The first European Americans to arrive in what is now Apache County were Spanish missionaries who came in 1820. In 1851, the US government granted land to Cochise Indian Nation on which Cottonwood was founded. It was named for cottonwoods that grew plentifully near the site where it was built. Cottonwood became a community after construction of the Mogollon Rim Railroad began in 1880 and transportation improved access to local markets by wagon road and stagecoach. The town's growth continued with incorporation as a city in 1907 and its becoming one of the most heavily populated municipalities within Apache County when it annexed the neighboring towns of Sierra Vista and Winslow in 1959. The economy of Cottonwood has been based primarily on agriculture since its founding; however, industry has also begun to grow significant proportions over time including mining, manufacturing, and services such as health care and tourism. Today, Cottonwood is one of two cities within Apache County that have both an economic center (the other being Sierra Vista) as well as an urban core (Cottonwood). This convergence has led to increased civic engagement among residents as well as growth potential for downtown businesses including restaurants, retailers, bars/pubs/nightclubs, office space, and more.
