Cottonwood is located on the east side of the Salt River and about 15 miles northeast of Tucson. It is bordered by Graham to the south, Mohave County to the west, and Cochise County to the north. The first people to live in Cottonwood were Mexicans who had been brought over as workers on a nearby railroad. By 1853, cotton had become a mainstay of the local economy and cottonwoods were abundant enough that one could be found growing in every drive-through window of a local store. The town name comes from two trees that grew around what is now downtown Cottonwood: "cotton" for its soft fiber content and "wood" for its close proximity to other towns in Pima County. Cottonwood experienced some growth during World War II when many men served in the military or worked on munitions factories near Tucson. After the war ended, businesses closed down and most residents left town; however, a few stayed behind and started their own businesses such as grocery stores, restauraunts and mechanic shops. Downtown Cottonwood has seen several changes over time including an increase in development due to new apartments being built along with an expansion into retail space formerly used by banks and other commercial interests before they moved out or changed hands multiple times until it became available for residential use; this has created another business district which includes several high-end restaurants as well as smaller boutiques/storespace known collectively as "The Strip." Today's downtown Cottonwood features several blocks of restored historic buildings dating back to 1885 including both original courthouse square brick building (now used as a library) on First Street NE between Second Avenue NE & Third Avenue NE (formerly home of various commercial interests), old post office building (now home of Glendale Museum), Masonic lodge building (now home of Phoenix Symphony Orchestra), Stonington Hotel (& restaurant) originally built by Mormon pioneers in 1850s & 1860s on current site then purchased by Mrs John Woolridge Glidden who opened it as "The Woolridge" after moving from Nauvoo IL & later renamed it The Glidden Hotel; also visible are two large warehouses built during World War II adjacent to Third Avenue NE across from Masonic Lodge that once housed numerous smaller businesses within walking distance including three banks - National Bank Building (First bank since 1906), Citizens Bank Building (First bank since 1907) & United States Trust Company Building - now occupied by Bed Bath& Beyond
