Cottonwood, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is located on the east side of the US-Mexico border and is bordered by Mexico to the north and east, and Pinal County to the south. It is directly adjacent to Apache Junction National Monument. Cottonwood was founded in 1865 as a trading post by Nicholas Cottonwood and his brother Cyrus Cottonwood. The name "Cottonwood" comes from nearby CottonWOOD Hill which rises over 4,500 feet (1,200 m). At first these pioneers grew cotton for export but soon discovered that they could also produce food crops such as wheat and potatoes using irrigation techniques developed in eastern North America. In 1879 Nicholas Cottonwood married Anna Maria Keyes who had been born in 1834 in Apache Junction, New Mexico Territory. They moved their family to Cottonwood where he farmed land and operated a store until his death in 1912. His wife continued to live there until her death in 1980. After her death, their son John Averill Cottonwood bought the house on Main Street which now stands as an historical landmark with its own museum accredited by Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). John Averill became involved with local politics after buying the property and served as Mayor from 1984-1988; he also ran for office twice unsuccessfully as a Democrat against Republican candidates both times.Since then it has been managed by his daughter Kimberly Averill Wittekamp who lives there full time with her husband David Wittekamp Jr., chair of the board of trustees for Apache Junction Museum District Incorporated since 1987 The town of Cottonwood was established around 1865 when Nicholas Cottonwood and his brother Cyrus set up business trading goods with miners downrange on Mexican soil while they were still living near Fort Lowell on Indian Territory

In fact, the only thing that exists in Cottonwood other than its namesake tree are some abandoned buildings and a few stray dogs. The town was founded in 1912 by John A. Sorenson and his wife Lillie. It was originally called "Sora" after the cottonwoods found near the town site. From 1912 until 1951, Cottonwood was part of Pinal County. In 1951, Cottonwood became a city and remained so until it merged with neighboring Glendale into one town on January 1, 2002. As a result of this merger, Cottonwood had no significant cultural or historical landmarks left to enjoy outside of its name-dubious reputation as an unremarkable place to live and visit incidentally while passing through on your way to somewhere more interesting. Despite this sorry state of things, there are still people who live in and around Cottonwood full time and continue its proud tradition of failing to learn anything about their own community's past without help from anyone else outside of themselves (or worse yet; without even bothering to look). So if you're looking for an excuse not to go anywhere near this unassuming little town – well, you've come to the wrong place!
