Cottonwood is a small town in the Apache County, Arizona, United States. It is located at 34° 56' N, 112° 04' W. The population was 269 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood was founded in 1886 and named for cottonwoods that had been grown there before. The town used to be a stop on the old Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1911, Cottonwood's post office was destroyed by an Indian attack. A year later, a new post office opened and continued to serve until it closed in 1925 due to low mail volume. In 1936, Cottonwood became one of two towns in Apache County (the other being Phoenix) that passed cityhood status and received their own police department. A year after this change, the cottonwoods were removed from town limits and annexed into Phoenix proper. In 1945, Cottonwood lost its cityhood status and reverted back to Apache County resident only status; however, it still has its own police department today as well as a local fire department which operates out of the high school gymnasium complex which also serves as home court for the local basketball team. The most recent gun target history comes from when NRA member Jerry Ortiz began shooting at targets off his property outside his home during games of paintball with friends in 1993-1994 season using air rifles which he purchased commercially from civilians who would shoot them out of his yard onto his property right next to where he currently lives today!

The Cottonwood Massacre took place on October 20, 1912 near Cottonwood, Arizona when a group of gunmen killed six people and wounding others. This was the deadliest shooting in the town’s history.

Cottonwood, Arizona is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population of Cottonwood was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2019. The history of Cottonwood began with the arrival of Mexicans in 1853. cottonwoods were planted along the Ute and Santa Cruz Rivers. In 1885, a mill was built in Cottonwood by J. P. Morgan and Company for the production of yarn from cotton plants grown along the riverbanks. The mill operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1902. After the mill's destruction, several small families started farm operations around Cottonwood, raising livestock and planting crops such as wheat and corn. One family ran a bakery that became known for its bread made from flour brought in by horse-drawn carts from nearby Scottsdale or Peoria Heights; this bakery is still open today and serves local customers). In 1915, an irrigation project was completed on the south side of town by Southern Water Supply Company to provide water for agriculture and housing developments east of town (the first major irrigation project in Arizona). The original name for Cottonwood was Agua Caliente (Warm Water Creek). When Southern Water Supply Company merged with Arizonasouthern Electric Cooperative to form Southern Arizona Corporation in 1944, they changed the name to Cottonwood Corporation because electric generation had become prevalent at that time near Railroad Junction where power lines crossed two rivers: Tucson River on one side and I-10 on the other (this location also served as headquarters forSouthern Arizona Corporation until 1984). In 1955, Home Depot opened its first store in Cottonwood when it purchased a store from James Litton which closed down after only six months due to high rents
