Cottonwood, Arizona is located in the Apache Nation and has a population of about 1,200. The town was founded in 1881 by white settlers as Cottonwood Springs. It was renamed Cottonwood after General James H. Polk's proclamation of Executive Order 10646 on December 17, 1881 which named the city for General Polk and established its boundaries. The first post office was established here on October 15, 1881. The townsite had a population of about 150 people when it incorporated as a town on January 20, 1886. Incorporation happened because of efforts by the Prescott Republican Club to get the city off its Indian reservation and into the general community. In 1902, cottonwood incorporation increased with incorporation of neighboring towns White Sands and Bisbee.
