The area that is now Cottonwood was part of the Mexican territory that was ceded to the United States after Mexico's collapse. The first settlers in what is now Cottonwood were Anglo-Americans, and they began buying and selling land in what is today the city. In 1865, a group of Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Cottonwood and began building a log cabin on the present-day corner of SW Third Street and First Avenue. This early settler community was known as Cedar City because of its location near Cedar Creek. In 1868, when US President Abraham Lincoln designated Apache County as part of Arizona Territory, Cedar City became a county seat. The opening of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1870 helped spur development within Cottonwood. By 1881, cotton had become one of the town’s main sources of revenue; however, gun parts sales continued to be an important aspect of local economy until after World War II. In 1925, when Cottonwood established its own school system via chartering from Pima County, gun parts sales became an even more significant facet of its economy. Throughout most of this time period, manufacturing remained an important sector for Gun Barrel Hardware Company (GBH), which operated outofCottonwood until it merged with Western Arms Corporation (WAC) in 1963 to form National Firearms Industries (NFI). From FI’s inception through 1987 – when it merged with Brady Manufacturing Company – NFI was one of America’s leading firearms manufacturers. As part company president Tom Brady once said: “Our motto has always been ‘quality over quantity.' We have spent our life trying to make sure every firearm we produce meets or exceeds our customers' expectations." In 1928, John Wesley Powell founded The National Geographic Society in Washington D C and donated land to establish their Tucson headquarters on Camelback Mountain overlooking downtown Phoenix suburbs including Cottonwood where they published their first magazine issue that year records show an initial population of about seventy people under one roof for what would become one of America's largest media organizations with over fifteen thousand employees as of 2009 . In 1949 when The University of Arizona opened its new campus adjacent to downtown Tucson, much interest centered around nearby Cottonwood due to UA's decision to locate its scientific research facilities there across from Pima Community College and within walking distance of many homes and businesses among other benefits.. Thus began what has been called "The Crescent City Years" as UA quickly became one of America’s most highly respected universities while also enjoying continued growth thanks in part to associated development both within-the-city limits (in particular business incubation zones created by downtown revitalization efforts) as well as outlying areas such as Cottonwood which continues today to maintain close economic ties even after more than fifty years since UA relocated operations there from central Tucson

It was founded by Mormon pioneers who were looking for a place to settle after departing Utah. Cottonwood currently has a population of around 100 people. The town was named after cottonwoods that grew near it on the banks of the Green River. The first house in Cottonwood was built in 1868 by James H. Smith and his wife Belle Coulthard Smith. In 1870, John Witherspoon moved from Salt Lake City to start an agricultural farm near Cottonwood with his brother-in-law David Bridger. By 1876, all but one of the original settlers had died from various causes including Indian Wars or disease imported overland from California during the Gold Rush period (1859-1872). In 1886, Harry Kapp acquired 160 acres adjacent to present day Cottonwood for $10 per acre ($ in current dollars). This land became known as "Kapp's Addition."
