During World War I, cotton mills were built in Cottonwood and other towns near Tucson to produce munitions for the war effort; however, most of these mills closed during the war because of increased competition from American TEXTILE INDUSTRY Production Centers (ATCPs). After the end of World War II, cotton production slowly resumed until it peaked in 1980 when 2 million pounds per day were produced. However, this level of production has since been replaced by more modern methods such as distribution centers and textiles are now produced domestically instead. In response to this issue dated 2006, Cottonwood formed a Working Group with representatives from local businesses and government institutions including USDA’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as well as private landowners interested in developing sustainable practices with cotton: CottonWOOD.
