Cottonwood is a census-designated place in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,947 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is part of the Tucson–Phoenix metropolitan area. Cottonwood was founded in 1881 by J.D. Tate and named for cottonwoods found near his rancho (now known as Imperial Valley), about 15 miles upstream from present day Cottonwood. In 1915, when the town became an incorporated municipality, it had a population of 688 people and included portions of Apache and Pima Counties. The unincorporated community of Cottonwood Village bore the name until its incorporation into Cottonwood in 1965; it no longer exists as a separate entity although some residents still call themselves "CottonWOODers". The land that now makes up Cottonwood was first leased to Mariano Ruiz in 1864 on what is now Goodyear Mesa Road east of Apache Junction. On February 14, 1865 he sold 1/2 section 8 east of present-day Upton to James Hyrum Fuller for $10 per acre plus $1 per month for 12 years with no interest or royalties payable until full payment could be made on the entire tract including homesteads allotted to him by Congress at Fort Stanton on July 4th 1787 (the date upon which Mormon settlers under Brigham Young crossed over dry Colorado River). On November 10th 1870 Juan Ortiz & Manuel Chavez de la Vega petitioned mineral rights from USGS surveyor George Stephenson within sight of their Rancho San Vicente de los Reyes y el Rey located northwest corner mile marker 6 north on Devils Peak boundaries between Mexican National Forest #16 and US Forest Service boundary #14 approximately 5 miles northeast from present day Weaver's Summit Rd intersection opposite boundaries between Mexican National Forest #16 & US Forest Service boundary #14 today's Fountain Hills Rd intersection just south southeast corner mile marker 9 west side boundary between Mexican National Forest#16 & US Forest Service boundary#14 today's Gila Wilderness State Park entrance today's Phoenix Mountains Wilderness limits lying due east line along center thereof westerly thenESE direction thenceNW nearly due southwesterly trending uphill toward Carson City past summit thenENE along edge nearest Camelback Mountain looking northwest towards Navajo Lake about 20 miles distant thence due SSW along edge nearest Lakes Mead and Mohave Rivers about 25 miles distant but unfriendly

Cottonwood is a small town located in Apache County, Arizona. The population was 1,354 as of the 2010 census. Cottonwood has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and the first white settlers arrived in 1881. Cottonwood was founded on May 25, 1881 by J.M. Hutchins and Wm.D. Hensley as a result of their efforts to found a new settlement on what is now the eastern edge of Apache County and within the boundaries of present-day Cottonwood Townships. The area had been under Mexican jurisdiction since 1821 when it was part of the Rancho San Pedro de Arizonas land grant to José María Morelos y Pico. After Mexican independence from Spain was granted in 1821, Anglo-Americans began exploration for mineral rights in this region which led to development of cotton plantations in this area beginning in 1828–29 with James Fenton at Cimarron Peak (now Donner Summit). These early cotton growers were followed by other entrepreneurs who developed light industry including flour mills, cigar factories, cattle ranches and mining operations; however, most ranching continued until after World War II when production shifted to manufacturing such as clothing, automobiles and equipment. The first post office opened at Cottonwood on October 15th, 1886; however, it did not remain open long because mail was transferred to Phoenix more frequently then it could be delivered here due to distance and infrastructure issues between Tucson and Phoenix at that time. In 1907 the first school opened at Cottonwood which served students from Apache Valley Elementary School until 1919 when they moved into an annex building on Main Street which became known as “Hutchinson” School later that year following the death of Mrs. Hutchinson’s husband John A., Sr.. Hutchins Elementary still serves students today alongside nearby Roosevelt High School which opened its doors in 1969th grade after serving students from Indian Springs Elementary for nearly thirty years prior thereto! In 1938 work began on organizing a township government for Apache County; however due to lack of sufficient funds local officials elected Notch Henson as sole Township Officer instead resulting in his departure from office less than one year later during what would become known as “the Notch Years” due largely to controversies surrounding how much power he actually had over township affairs including control over voting locations and budget allocations! When notches changed positions within county government again starting with Sheriff Harry Payne in 1948 things got even messier before finally being resolved through elections held two years later! Like many small towns throughout America during this time period there were few services available outside of those provided by individual members or groups so without fail either politics or religion dominated all aspects Of life while overall everyone just functioned kinda like big kids who just didn’t know better?!?!! In 1957 local resident George Aiken formed the nucleus for what would eventually become known as “Cottonwood United Methodist Church” following service announcement made jointly by both churches asking members if they would join together To provide sanctuary for refugees fleeing fighting around Korea along with offering financial assistance provided free OF THE KIND TO OUR MISSIONARY SON GEORGE AIKEN?!?!! With world events rapidly changing during that decade such As McCarthyism becoming active American Christians decided against taking sides rather choosing neutrality ultimately leading many people across denominational lines To leave their homes forever neverTo return……….……………..??!?!?!!! This event also helped lead directly to current day problems facing our church with regards To officiating services !!!!??? And although we always tryTo make up For Previous Mistakes We really CanNOT Change What Happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!
