Cottonwood, Arizona is a small town in the Apache territory located east of Tucson. The town was founded in 1885 by Juan Padilla and named after the cottonwood trees that pepper the area. The first gun shop in Cottonwood opened in 1886 and was run by John Hays. In 1897, George Armstrong Custer was killed here while on his way to a roundup of horses. After Custer's death, many people in Cottonwood took up arms to fight for his memory and country. One such person was Independent Rifleman Arthur Wetherbee who fought in World War I wearing a Cottonwood hat as part of his unit. In 1924, the Chandler-Townsend rifle company built a rifle range here which remains operational today. From 1927 until 1984, Cottonwood hosted the annual Cowboy Festival which featured performances from various performers including Hank Snow, Ray Price, Willie Nelson and Tom Petty.

Today's area amounts to only 866 acres (318 hectares), making it one of the smallest towns in Arizona by land area

The population reached its high point in the 1960s when it numbered over 1,500 people. However, recent population decline has led to a decrease in crime rates and an increase in tourism.
The Cottonwood Mountains are a range of mountains located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The range is bordered by the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area to the east and south, the Mohave National Forest to the west, and Pinal County to the north. The Cottonwood Mountains are part of the Eastern Arizona mountain chain. The Cottonwood Mountains were first settled by Native American people who called them "Tonto Peak" because of their prominent peak. The first white settler in what is now Phoenix was James Haggerty who founded his ranch on Cottonwood Mesa in 1887. Haggerty named his ranch after cottonwoods that he saw growing near his home. In 1912, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped much of central Arizona when he was mapping out parts of today's Arizona Territory for US President Grover Cleveland. While exploring Surprise Canyon in 1903, Powell discovered copper mines there which led to development around Copper Queen mine until it closed in 1907. After years of exploration and mining operations, however, only a few acres remain within present-day Phoenix as a result of these activities. In 1916, Jerome Butchart developed an oilfield near Apache Junction while working for Standard Oil Company as a geologist for its cattle drive program across Arizona from Prescott to Tucson. After butchart drilled two wells at nearby Ocotillo Wells on February 17th 1916 (near where modern day Camelback Road meets Interstate 10), he decided to name one well Apache Hills after himself and another well Apache Well after Butchart's Ranch adjoining Apache Junction where both wells were drilled. This naming policy continued through most of Butchart's production career at Apache Junction until production stopped in 1969 due to environmental concerns about oil spills caused by truck traffic over shale formations underlying Production Springs Rd., adjacent the drill sites today
