In 1951, Melvin Spears was indicted on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon in violation of county law and plead guilty to one count only. That year, Cottonwood repealed its gun prohibition ordinance and began allowing citizens to carry firearms openly without permits. In 1973-1974, Vernon "Buddy" Ferguson was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon after police found an unloaded shotgun in his carport. He eventually plead no contest and was sentenced to three months probation and fined $100. The following year saw another incident when gunfire injured four people while they were playing baseball outside the local movie theater. This led to new city ordinances being passed that banned handguns from most public areas within city limits. Since then, handgun possession has generally been allowed ONLY inside municipal boundaries or within the confines of an approved shooting range/club house (seegun laws for more information).

Cottonwood, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 5,526 at the 2000 census. Cottonwood is located on the east side of the county and is bordered by Cochise County to the north, Navajo County to the east, and Apache County to the south. The first person to live in Cottonwood was George Waugh who arrived there in 1869. He sold goods from his ranch at Cottonwood and became a member of the Tempe Board of Education. Waugh also founded Gadsden Mining Company which later merged with other mining companies to form Northern Mining Corporation which built several mines including Copper King Mine and Fenton Lead Mines near Cottonwood. In 1881 Charles Henson came to Cottonwood from Tucson with his family and started a small grocery store. In 1886 he added a post office and named it after his father-in-law John Atherton (1820-1901). Henson served as postmaster for many years until his death in 1903. In 1896 C Rothery opened an ammunition store at Cottonwood which functioned until 1914 when it closed due to World War I munitions shortages. In 1925 Don Heroldopened what became one of Phoenix's first drive-in cinemas called "The Drive In" in what is now known as Herold Park across from Valley View High School; this movie theatre served as a community center for many years before being demolished in 2006. In 1933 cottonwoods school district was established which included Cottonwood Elementary School, East High School, West High School, North High School, South Middle School (now known as Goodyear Middle School), Archer MiddleSchool (now known as Apache Trails MiddleSchool) and Jackpot Hill IntermediateSchool (now known as Coyote Hills IntermediateSchool). After many years of struggle by citizens/school board members regarding enrollment levels within the newly formed district, Trustees voted to close ArcherMiddle SCHOOL effective September 1st 1934 due lack of students or parents willing or ableto send their children there during that time period . At that time only GoodyearMiddle SCHOOL remained open along with EastHigh SCHOOL serving dual purpose as both GoodyearMiddle SCHOOL's “alternate” PKU (.50 caliber rifle range)and full high school; both schools were closed on September 1st 1934 concurrentlly with ArcherMiddle SCHOOL’s closure…..
