Cottonwood is a small city in the Apache Nation reservation of Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is located on the banks of the Salt River within Cochise National Forest. In 1906 Cottonwood was renamed for Major General George Armstrong Custer after he died during World War I while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division under Chief Joe Carpenter at Battleship Row and his body was repatriated to Indian Territory after being interred at Fort Sill (now Oklahoma City). On October 25th 1942 during World War II MacArthur awarded cottonwood town land title deeds to local citizens which triggered much celebration by residents who had always dreamed about having their own small town named after them! The first service was held on November 3rd 1942 with Reverend Alonzo Adams officiating as Pastor/Mayor and then Dr Lawrence Saunders as Town Clerk - both men were natives of Wichita Falls, Texas who had served in government there before coming to Cottonwood to become Mayoralty seekers! After Rev Adams' death in 1984 a new service was performed annually until 2000 when that tradition ended due to lack of volunteersverness! A parade celebrating the centenary of World War I departed from downtown every year on Veterans Day until 2006 when that tradition changed because there wasn't enough money raised! A float honoring all troops killed or missing during WWI made its way down Main Street each year until 2007 when that float stopped moving because it became difficult to tow it due to corrosion issues caused by recently rains! In 2008 a brand new float made its debut which honors all troops killed or missing since 9/11/2001!!!
