The town was founded in 1902 by James Denton and named for cottonwoods that grow near his rancho (land grant). The first store opened in 1903 and the first post office in 1905. Cottonwood had a population of around 100 people when it incorporated as a village in 1912. In 1916, the name was changed to Cottonwood because of the increasing popularity of cotton among farmers in Arizona. The town's first school opened in 1917 and its first fire department service arrived in 1922-23. In 1932, Cottonwood became an incorporated city with its own government under Mayor Wm Hickey and City Manager Homer Lyle Smith. In 1941, during World War II, Cottonwood participated as part of the Army's 10th Mountain Division campground at Camp Verde outside Yuma; "This little corner has been key to our success," said Lieutenant Colonel Harry Mudgett about Cottonwood during his command days there from 1942-1945; "We used to have all sorts of lice here - now we've got some amazing mosquitoes." A fire destroyed most of downtown between 1951-1952 which caused many residents to flee for their lives; however, many returned over time including one man who rebuilt much of what remains today after escaping from the firestorm aftermath
