After years of cultivation by Native Americans and Mexican traders, cotton production peaked around 1870 and began to declines shortly thereafter due to factors such as better methods of harvesting and transportation. However, cotton farming continued throughout the 19th century into the early 20th century due to its importance as a cash crop in Mexico and United States markets alike. During World War II, Italian American Italians working at U.S.-owned munitions plants near Phoenix took up residence in various villages along Interstate 10 near Tucson before they were relocated to Cottonwood during 1944-1945 as part of Operation CrossroadsOperation Paperclip which resulted in many European Jews coming over to America during that time period seeking refuge from Nazi Germany. Many refugees settled into what is now Cottonwood where they started businesses such as grocery stores, hotels/motels, bakeries etc., until their arrival created an influx of white residents which slowly mixed with Indian villagers over time creating an increasingly Anglo-Saxon community today."

Cottonwood is a census-designated place in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 762 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is located on the eastern edge of the Navajo Nation, east of Nogales and west of Winslow. Arizona's first permanent European settlers arrived in 1867 when Captain Fenton Cooke landed his schooner "Eagle" on the shore of what is now Cottonwood. After purchasing land from the Apache nation, Cooke set about building a home base for his new colony on San Pedro Mesa, about northeast of present-day Cottonwood. The first post office was established at Cottonwood in 1870; it moved to its current location near the end of that decade. The town's name derives from cottonwoods which grew abundantly on land adjacent to present-day town site. In 1875, proprietor Elias Lacey built a sawmill and gristmill just south of present day Cottonwood; this mill became one of many local businesses that flourished during days when Phoenix was a small frontier town numbering only around 100 people. Lacey also dug up an extensive coal mine near modern day Nogales which fueled much early Phoenix growth and development; today's Mining District Monument marks where he prospected for coal among acres now occupied by McNiven Park Golf Course and other residential developments. Lacey died in 1902 before any plans were made to develop his property into a city but many believe he would have approved if such had been possible given his contributions to Pioneertown development north of downtown Phoenix
In 1885, the Cottonwood Mining and Milling Company was organized to exploit rich coal seams in the vicinity of Cottonwood. In 1890, a post office was established at Cottonwood, and by 1907, the town had developed into a small mining community. The company eventually went bankrupt in 1912, and the town ceased to exist.
