The town was founded by Mormons in 1868 as Cottonwood Station on the Gila River. In 1869, Brigham Young sent his brother-in-law Edward Sitton to found Cottonwood on land given him by Thomas Gray Hinton. At first it was called Hinton but Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid renamed it after General George Armstrong Custer during their stay in Tombstone about 1870. In 1899, Cottonwood became an incorporated city when it annexed parts of neighboring Phoenixville and Glendale. In 1959, Cottonwood established its own school district which continues to exist today. The cottonwoods are natives to this location; they were likely brought over from Mexico in small groups during Sierra Leonean and other slave trade expeditions that took place prior to World War II. The trees were cut down for fire wood or lumber long before there was any understanding of what forests actually looked like or what they could provide commercially; many people thought they resembled palm trees due to their similarities in shape and texture (even today). However, with some careful study of photos taken around this time period—mostly taken around Phoenix—it can be plainly seen that these “cottonwoods” would have been much more resemble gigantic tamarisk trees standing proud over even modern day homes!
