In the early 1800s, the land in and around Coolidge, Arizona was divided between Spanish colonists and Native Americans. The first European to arrive in what is now Coolidge was José María Hidalgo, who named the area after his friend and mentor, President George Washington. In 1824, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded New Mexico and encountered American forces at Santa Fe. Santa Ana decided to retreat and began a march back eastward. On October 29, 1824 while traveling through Tucson on his way home from battle against Mexican forces near Presidio of Tucson, Santa Ana's army came across a group of Utes living behind some hills along the San Pedro River. Commander Don Carlos Manuel Armijo ordered his men to kill all of the Utes inside the trading post if they didn't want their lives taken as well as any supplies they had with them. Many of the Utes were already dead or dying from exposure or gunshot wounds when they arrived at armijo's location. Aftermath: When General Armijo found out about what happened he becameombs over his decision to order such an indiscriminate massacre. The Massacre of Cochise: A few weeks later another attack by American forces against Apache Indians led by Captain John Custer also resulted in death for many including women and children (the Apaches did not believe that white people could harm them). This event is sometimes referred to as "The Great Apache Raid." It has been estimated that up to 25% of Native Americans killed during this time perished from natural causes such as disease or accidents rather than being killed by Anglo-Saxon military attackers. Interest waned until 1849 when wagon trains began arriving bearing goods for Prescott settlers on the Gila River Valley north of Phoenix under entrepreneurs named Merritt Cooke and James Wolkonski respectively. With new fuel sources available outside of Mexico City (and more trade opportunities opening up due to California Gold Rush), gold fever swept throughout central Arizona in search of newfound riches beyond anything anyone had ever seen before! By 1863 both Cooke & Wolkonski had left Prescott for Goodyear Wellsburg where they founded what would become known as Arizona Territory; Coolidge quickly became one of its most important settlements! As coolidge grew wealthier her citizens developed a certain type of conservatism which helped keep their economy afloat despite difficult times during the 1870s drought! Although some Arizonans disapproved cf this kind Of conservatism it ultimately served their interests because it kept prices down on goods while providing jobs for local residentsduring tough times
