Coolidge is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,834 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area. The first residents of Coolidge were white Anglo Saxon Protestants from Connecticut who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1849. They built a log cabin and started to grow crops. In 1875, they organized a Methodist church and named their village "Coolidge" after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Lucilla Harriman Coolidge (1847-1925). In 1912, the community developed an air raid shelter that became known as "The Beehive." When World War II began, local farmers produced food for military troops and their families by growing corn, wheat, beans and other vegetables in their gardens; later this production was continued bya post office and grocery store. In 1951, when Dwight Eisenhower was elected president of the United States, he moved to nearby Mesa to be closer to his family. He recommended Coolidge as an ideal location for a presidential retreat. The townspeople agreed and erected several structures around Eisenhower's home—the biggest being Echo Lake—to accommodate more than 1,500 guests who came for three days of relaxation in late July 1952. As leader of America during some of its most trying times―during the Korean War; Watergate; two terms as president following Nixon's resignation; negotiations leading up to Israel's independence ―Eisenhower never lost interest inCoolidge or its people. His popular address at The Summit on Aging in 1984 demonstrated his continuing commitment: “It has been my great honor to preside over one hundred years of growth here at Echo Lake Ranch‐Partnership Park…. As I look out over these rolling hills ringed with lakes that reach all the way down into Mexico City‐I am reminded not just of where I come from but also how far I have traveled since then….. My fellow citizens here——I cannot emphasize enough how much we are proud to call ourselves ‘Arizona’s Jewish neighbors’——are proof that hard work leads to success…. We share values which bind us together like nothing else…."

As a result, most of the cultural resources from Coolidge have been lost or destroyed over time. However, some of the more notable residents from this period include President Harry S Truman and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
