Coolidge is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, located about 20 miles east of Phoenix. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,171. The Coolidge Post Office opened on October 1, 1907. The first gunsmith in Coolidge was Harry Hetrick and his shop is still open today. The first guns brought to this area were shotguns from England and Spain. After World War I, many Americans left for military service and brought their shotguns with them. These guns were cleaned and oiled by local gunsmiths before being sold to new owners. After the early 1960s when more people started moving into central Arizona, more gun enthusiasts moved here as well. Gun cleaning became an important part of this community because most firearms used oils or solvents to clean them which caused some problems down the line (most notably a fire at a ammunition store that destroyed several hundred rounds of ammo). In the early 1900s, Coolidge was an unincorporated community in central Arizona. It is now a ghost town, located on the banks of the Gila River. Coolidge was named after President Calvin Coolidge, who served from 1923 to 1929. The town was founded by Territorial Governor John EllisonCoolidge in 1912 as a small station on the Gila River. It grew rapidly and by 1920 had a population of 100 people. The settlement was platted in 1924 and became a city under City Manager Wanda Tatum in 1925. In 1933, it merged with nearby Globe to form the present-day Coolidge Village. During World War II, many residents of Coolidge took military service or worked for government agencies. Some residences were used as Camp Crystal City during World War II; others remain standing but are not currently used for housing. The town's only building that remains standing is the Administration Building which served as Municipal Court House and Mayor's Office until its demolition in 1984. The decline of Coolidge began shortly after it became unincorporated when development along the Gila River increased rapidly due to irrigation projects authorized by state lawmakers at that time. By 1961, only two houses remained standing in Coolidge while all other buildings had been demolished; this caused significant social and economic decline for the community over ensuing years."

The residents of Coolidge petitioned Roosevelt to allow them to build a dam themselves, but he refused. A few years later, Coolidge moved to Prescott and developed a large dairy operation there.
