In the early 1900s, Coolidge was a small town in Arizona. It was then that firearms were first introduced into the community. In 1903, an informal group of citizens gathered to discuss how firearms could be used safely and effectively in the community. They decided to form a society to promote firearm safety and education. The society was called the "Gun Club." At its inception, the club had six members: Colonel John Hemenway, Dr. J.B. Ladd, Mrs. Wm Sperry, Mr. Harry Selfridge, and Mayor John Hanna. The club's mission was to promote gun ownership among residents of Coolidge and provide information on firearm use and safety for all individuals who wished to own a weapon within the community. The Gun Club began by promoting rifle shooting events throughoutCoolidge Canyon National Recreation Area (CANRA). Rifles were provided free of charge for these shoots; however, participants were required to bring their own ammunition for each session!eventually producing over 350 rounds of ammunition from various local businesses! These rifles would later be used in many local shootouts during prohibition years! The Gun Club also organized annual meetings which would include discussions on topics such as revolver hunting techniques and pistol griping etiquette! These meetings are still held today as part of NRA's Annual Meeting program! Throughout Prohibition years (1915-1921), membership in the Gun Club increased as more people became interested in owning firearms!eventually resulting in shootings at local bars and restaurants where weapons were confiscated by law enforcement! In 1921, after 10 years of operation, Colonel John Hemenway resigned due to health reasons; however, his successor Dr. J B Ladd continued operations until his death in 1925!! This left Mrs Wm Sperry as President pro tempore of theGunClub until her death four years later!!! After Dr Ladd's death there was much discussion about who should take over his position since no one else had any experience with running a gun club!!!! Finally it came down to Harry Selfridge who took over!!! After only two months at the helm he made several changes including changing how dues were collected which resulted in some shootings happening outside!!!!! After 3 months selfridge resigned due to illness !!!!! This left Mayor John Hanna as President pro tempore!!!!!!!!!!!!! During this time period there were sporadic shootings but overall things seem pretty stable…..until 1928 when another shooter happened inside our clubhouse killing 2 people!!!! Just 6 short years later we saw another shooting happen outside our building again……….this time leaving 3 people dead!!!!! Just 2 short years afterMayor Hanna passed away…..the last shot heard from Coolidge occurred when cartridges killed Sheriff “Doc” Goff while he arrested someone!!!
