The town of Coolidge, Arizona was founded in 1874 by James E. Coolidge and his wife Mary. The town was named for President Grover Cleveland and Mrs. Coolidge's favorite horse, who had died in a hunting accident two years earlier. The Coolidges first store opened in 1875. In 1907, the first school was built in the town. TheCoolidges also operated a creamery, a bakery, and a post office until the late 1800s when the last one closed down. coolidge is now an unincorporated community located in Pinal County about 16 miles south of Phoenix on State Route 111. James E., Sr.'s parents were farmers from New Hampshire who moved to Arizona Territory when it was organized as part of Mexico in 1846. James Jr., born November 6th, 1847 at Easton, Massachusetts married Mary Aiken on February 12th, 1861 in Nogales County, Arizona Territory while he still lived at home with his family; they came west together on their wagon train (the "Arizona Trail"). They arrived at what is now Coolidge on March 14th of that year after journeying overland from Tucson via Yuma and Maricopa counties to reach Prescott Valley where they established their initial farmstead near present-day Globe Road southwest of Whatcom City (now Scottsdale). On October 3rd 1870 Mr & Mrs Coolidge had their second child Harry W.: At this time Great Britain had just given up its possessions east of the Rockies following its defeat by Prussia at Königgrätz (October 26-29 1870) which ended British control over most of Europe east of the Rhine River including all German speaking areas except Bavaria - so there must have been some excitement back home! When James E’s father died suddenly six weeks later on October 15th 1870 only three-year old Harry W was left behind to take care of things; but he seems not to have minded very much since he resumed farming operations soon thereafter himself with help from his Mothers sidekick Nancy Sessions during those tough days before statehood laws allowed women even rudimentary voting rights! When finally granted full citizenship by Congress on January 4th 1881 both James Jr & Nancy got to vote alongside men however Nancy did NOT get along well with local Republicans so she eventually moved away around 1889 or 1890 becoming involved with various suffrage organizations hereabouts before dying circa 1913...so young Harry W went back into business 'by himself' for many more years :-) So ends our little history lesson folks!! coolidge became an unincorporated community due largely to Mr Coolidge's efforts although evidence suggests it may have originated somewhat earlier if not for Apache raids etc.; today's residents are descendants either directly or indirectly of JE Coolidge and/or his wifeMary Aiken who were prominent citizens long before they made their own homes hereabouts!

Coolidge was born on October 8, 1879 in the town of Gadsden, Alabama. He attended public schools and then graduated from Yale University in 1903. After his graduation, he moved to Arizona to become a mining engineer. In 1916, he became the first Governor of Arizona Territory. He served as governor until his death in 1933.
