It is an agricultural area in the western United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area. Chino Valley is named after Rancho Chino, a grant from Mexico to John Sutter in 1847. Chino Valley began as 1280 acres (4 km2) of rolling grassy hills and wildflower fields near Scottsdale. The first settlers were professional traders who traveled to Apache Pass to buy goods and sell horses, cattle, and other goods at Fort phoenix on the bluffs overlooking Chino Valley. In 1865, General Grant visited Scottsdale while on his way to meet Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and he saw that there was nothing for him here but developed it into a major bedroom community for Phoenix people working in nearby Mesa or Scottsdale. The early residents were farmers who raised crops such as cotton, maize, apples, oranges, potatoes and watermelons; they also built houses made out ofadobe lumber with adobe roofs or chicken coops with thatched roofs. A post office was established at Chino Vallejo in 1885; it changed its name to Chino Valley in 1907 because of land speculation by boosters associated with Henschel & Co., Inc., a railroad company whose station served the valley until 1912 when competition from Phoenix led to its closure. By 1920 there were over 100 businesses serving 1 million customers each month in what became one of Arizona's most vibrant commercial areas north of Tucson In 1950s rock music started playing out at local bars starting up all over town including Butte Bar which still exists today as one of my favorite places!

The valley was named for Antonio del Valle, who founded what is now Chino in 1868. A post office called Chino was established in 1885, and remained in operation until it closed in 1951. The name comes from a word meaning "hills" or "valley". In 1912 the U.S. Geological Survey renamed the valley after its founder, Manuela Gonzales de la Hoz y Martinez de los Herreros y Godoy (1872-1948), widow of Mexican president Agustín Benítez Lozano and mother of President Manuela Garza García (1946-2008).
