Chino Valley is a small town in Arizona, located in the Yavapai County area of the state. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Chino Valley is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is bordered by Mesa to the east, Scottsdale to the west, Chandler to the north, and Gilbert to the south. The community was named after Manuel Chino, who came from Guerrero, Mexico in 1847 and made his rancho (land grant) at Chino Creek near present-day Chino Valley. In 1887, Pecos County was organized from what were then Yavapai and Pima counties; Chino Valley became a part of that county. In 1912, Tucson incorporated as a city; it included land within what are now Chino Valley and Mesa neighborhoods. In 1958, when Phoenix annexed portions of Atherton and Buckeye Heights communities in Tempe Municipal District No. 2 (now Terre Haute), Chandler also annexed its portion of Tempe Municipal District No. 2 including Chino Valley; however, no annexation transaction took place between those two municipalities because Chandler had not become a city until 1959. In 1990–1991 American Canyon Mine closed due to environmental issues with arsenic associated with surface mine workings; this led to increased residential development around that time around Old Mine Road off I-10 just outside of town limits along Old Mine Rd., which bisected almost all MSTA lands east of US 90/AZ 176 until 1994 when they were reassigned from MSTA jurisdiction back into individualArizona public agencies administered by Arizonans for local purposes only - an event which precipitated much economic decline throughout most eastern Prescott Mountains especially adjacent to Old Mine Rd.; although there have been sporadic attempts over recent years by various individuals or organizations(most notably 3rd Avenue Communities Inc.)to revive old mine road designation as an arterial roadway leading through downtown & surrounding townsends attempting thereby resurrecting some measure(s) Of social function or economic opportunity thru tourism but without success
