The area was first populated by the Hualpais, who lived in the valley until the arrival of the Spanish in 1540. The Mexicans soon moved into the valley, and by 1851, it had become a part of Mexico. After the Mexican-American War, Chino Valley became part of United States territory. The towns that grew up around Chino Valley were founded by American settlers looking for a land tract they could claim as their own. The town of Oroville was founded in 1867, and it quickly became one of Arizona’s most important communities. It housed a railroad station and several businesses, including a store that sold goods to miners and farmers near Oroville Lake. In 1912, Oroville merged with nearby Bisbee to form Chino Valley City. There are still major settlements in Chino Valley today: Bisbee (which is now called Brush),summit (which is now called Towers), Porter Springs (now known as Jerome), Peoria (now known as Phoenix), Covina (now known as Glendale) and Yuma (now known as Scottsdale). Chino Valley experienced some significant changes during its history. In 1906, the federal government created Organized Ranching District #1 within California’s San Joaquin County to manage ranches used for livestock production in western Arizona Territory. This led to rapid population growth on various properties throughout the district – much of it centered around Oroville and Chino Valley City. Between 1907 and 1920, more than 2 million head of cattle were raised in Organized Ranching District #1Ranchos de la Mesa through local ranchers such as Doniphan Wickersham and John Sitton. This activity led to deforestation on both sides of the Colorado River – leading eventually to water scarcity on many ranchlands across northern Arizona Territory during World War I because so much grass had been cut down for cattle feedings over time! In 1926, however, an act Congress passed titled “An Act To Promote Agriculture And Commerce In California And Oregon” changed all this forever when it secures passage of what would come to be know as “the Gadsden Purchase Act” – which allowed US president Franklin D Roosevelt to purchase large tracts of land along California’s Central Coast from Mexican interests for $5 million dollars! Roosevelt used this money to create new irrigation projects throughout central America – creating new jobs along the way! Today, parts of eastern Arizona have similar ranchland holdings thanks partly to these same projects!
