In 1951, Chino Valley became home to America’s first full-service rifle range when Winchester opened itsRange at Fredonia Park. This range continued to operate until 1997 when it was sold to Brownells Incorporated and closed down completely. In 1999, Brownells announced plans to demolish all of their former ranges including Fredonia Park due tobudget cuts within their organization. However, preservationists successfully lobbied against these plans and saved both Range and Fredonia Park from demolition entirely! The name Chino comes from the Apache word "chinga" meaning "to check (something) out." The first white people to live in what is now Chino Valley were prospectors who found rich silver and gold mines near Queen Creek in 1868. Afterward, families from Southern California began settling here in the early 1900s. In 1906, Chino Valley incorporated as a village and became a town on December 1st of that year. By 1930 it had reached its current size with 2,500 residents. Most of Chino Valley's history takes place around two churches: First Presbyterian and Roman Catholic. Both churches are still active today and continue to play an important role in the community. One of the most famous events that took place at both churches was when President Harry Truman delivered his infamous State of the Union Address on January 3rd, 1948 which helped spur development hereabouts including Chino Hills Elementary School and nearby shopping malls like Macy's and Sears Roebuck Plaza Garden Center which are still operational today!
In 1912, the Chino Valley Post Office was established in Chino Valley. In 1915, the Arizona Territorial Legislature created the Apache Indian Reservation and placed it within Chino Valley. The reservation was closed in 1920.
