The small community was named after Redwood, California, where Fort Apache was located. The fort was built to protect the area from Comanche and Apache Indians. It was also used as a training ground for military personnel. In 1915, shorts-wearing prospector Harry Carrigan discovered copper and gold near Chandler. He started mining on what is now known as Carrigan Road. By 1916, he had developed a large mine and employed 50 men. There were also several mills in the area which produced flour, paper, shoes, lumber and other goods. In 1918, Chandler became an incorporated city and began growing rapidly with its new found wealth. The first red dot sight went operational at the nearby Redwood Arsenal in 1919.
