The name came about because the town had an abundance of clover for their hay crops and people found that it looked like Rome from a distance due to the clover fields lining both sides of SR-95 (present day Apache Boulevard). In 1896, an group of businessmen pooled money to build a school instead of purchasing one from individual owners or trustees as had been done before. For many years this school functioned as either private or parochial schools for citizens living in various parts of Pinal County until it became state government property in 1912; then it functioned as Phoenix High School until 1959 when it became Chandler Public Schools. In 1957, construction began on what would become Pershing Elementary which opened its doors in 1958 and served as the district's first graduate high school serving students throughout Pinal County until 1988 when Mesa Community College opened its doors and served students throughout Pinal County until 2002 when Channel Islands High School opened its doors after being constructed on land adjacent to Pershing Elementary Campus serving students through PreKindergarten through 12th grade;Channel Islands currently operates under dual enrollment status with Mesa Community College providing instruction through Grades 9-12 while also enrolling college seniors who have completed their undergraduate degrees program requirements;Mesa Community College has since moved into new facilities adjacent to Channel IslandsHigh School making room for Chome City Colleges new aviation/defence engineering/lawrence science building which will house our MFA programs alongside our renowned art programs
