The area that now Chandler was first settled by the Gila River People in 1867. They were driven out of their land by a force led by John Wesley Powell and his party during the 1870s wagon train drive through what is now Pinal County. In 1887, James W. Chandler bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of agricultural land east of Prescott from George Hennepin for $5 per acre ($0.48 per km2). He named it "Chandler" after himself and developed it into a town that grew rapidly due to irrigation water brought over from White Flint Dam on the Gila River. In 1927, Channelside Drive was completed as the first major road in Chandler when it connected downtown with Placentia Mesa north of I-10 and south of State Route 89A (now US 90). The completion of this road marked an important stage in Chandler's history as a commercial center because it made it possible for businesses to reach both Prescott and Phoenix without traveling far downriver each time. The opening of Interstate 10 increased traffic congestion on Channelside Drive so much that Chandler began building bypasses around the intersection in 1969 which are still visible today: East Road/I-10 bypasses Nochixton Road to the east and Gilbert Rd./I-10 to the west; West Road/I-10 bypasses Ivanhoe Ave./State Route 89A to the north; and South Road/I-10 connects with Alma Rd./US 90 just south of I-10 Exit 202 (Chandler Airport). On November 30, 1990, voters passed Initiative No. 488 ("An Act To Add More Land To Apacheland National Monument"), which created Apacheland National Monument within Pinal County - making Chancho Valley one of only two AZ counties not currently part of any national monument system! This act also provided financial support for Oak Flat National Wildlife Refuge Expansion Project - an ambitious conservation effort initiated by then–Governor Janet Napolitano which has resulted in some very high priorities being given serious attention by park officials including plans for new visitor centers, trailshead developments, expanded retail opportunities and more!
