Chandler, Arizona is a city located in the Phoenix metropolitan area and has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. The area now known as Chandler was part of the Pima Indian Reservation until 1912. Ammunition production began in 1868 when a man named George Wickersham developed a cannonball propellant recipe that he patented. In 1875, his company, Wickersham & Sons, became the first to produce firearms using this propellant. Ammunition production continued until 1903 when World War I led to an increase in ammunition demand and competition from other manufacturers. By 1919, ammunition production had ended entirely in Chandler due to World War II; however, it resumed after the war because of increasing demand for munitions during the Cold War era. Today, Chandler's economy relies primarily on manufacturing: munitions and aircraft parts are some of its top industries. It is named after Chandler and Henry Ford's Rancho Mirage ranch where both men grew up. The town began as a wagoner stop on the Arizonan trail in 1867 and was known as Cochise County's "birthplace of civilization." In 1903, it became part of Maricopa County. The first buildings in Chandler were log cabins built by Mormon settlers in 1868. By 1870, a post office had been established and the name Chandler was selected to represent Indian Territory when Arizona became a state. The railroad arrived in 1887 and with it came new settlers who began to build homes around the depot square. Businesses grew quickly with local farmers selling groceries, hardware, supplies and land for agricultural purposes. In 1913, Mayor Burt Hite designated Chandler an incorporated city within Maricopa County under the name of "Chandler." At that time, only white people could vote or own property in this racially segregated community which harkened back to cowboy days when discrimination against African Americans was common. With its functioning schools (1917), churches (1928) and stores (1930), downtown Chandler served as an important center for economic development untilaffordable housing became available outside of city limits during the late 1960s and early 1970s due to suburban sprawl across central Phoenix
