Casa Grande is a town in the U.S. state of Arizona, located on the Gila River Delta near the Mexican-American border. The name comes from Spanish meaning "House of Gold". The first European settler in Casa Grande was José María Páez, who arrived in 1788 and claimed land that includes much of today's Casa Grande area. The town was founded as a trading post by Don Manuel Orozco and his brother Vicente Orozco on January 15, 1868, after they succeeded in negotiating an agreement with Pueblo de los Angeles leaders for control over the Gila River valley. It became an official municipality on November 5, 1875. In 1912, it lost its status as a municipio to nearby Phoenix because of annexation by Phoenix into the United States. In 1907–08, American businessman Harry Emerson Fosdick began buying up properties along the Gila River Valley and included Casa Grande among his holdings. He donated most of his assets to establish what is now Southwest University in Casa Grande in 1914; Fosdick served as its first president and remain Honorary President to this day. Casa Grande has been home to many prominent people throughout its history: ranchers George Hargrave and Clifton Gilmore fought in World War I; actor Loretta Young live there during her early years; author Earl Grey lived there for many years while writing books about Arizona politics and culture; local historian Loren Coleman has written several books about Casa Grande's history; and six members of Congress have come from or spent time here since 1998 – including two Republicans (John McCain and Trent Franks).
