Casa Grande is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The Casa Grande–Chandler Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It includes much of the original settlement and business district around what is now Main Street (US-101). Casa Grande has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 12,000 years. The first European to visit Casa Grande was Francisco Vázquez de Coronado on July 25, 1540, during his trip from Mexico City to Yuma Proving Ground in what is now Mohave County. He named it San Marcos after Don Fernando del Valle's memory home of San Marcos de Tijuana near Mexico City. In 1868 Mormon leader Brigham Young called upon Latter-day Saints to come to Arizona and establish a new colony just east of Casa Grande on the Gila River. By 1870 only 350 Mormons remained in Utah Territory; most had left for other parts of America by then. Most people who would eventually live in Casa Grande came through nearby Nogales or Oro Valley before reaching here because there were no trains heading this way from Salt Lake City until about 1900. It wasn't until 1907 that US Route 66 was built through central Arizona and eastern Pima County giving travelers an easy way into Tucson without having to go too far downriver or westward along Interstate 10 or State Route 202 (now SR-185). As more people traveled east along I-10 they took US Route 66 as their main route into town instead of returning south on I-10 like earlier settlers had done which created some confusion for locals when they saw cars traveling down Main Street instead of following I-10 north as expected! The development around Main Street began with Fergus Bros., a hardware store that opened up in 1892 on the southeast corner of Main and Second Streets after being bought by Wanda Sappinger from her husband John Sappinger Sr.. In 1905 Mrs.'Sappinger sold her interest in the store to Hyrum Smith who moved it across First Street eastward where he founded Smith's Drug Store and operated it until his death in 1924/1925 also owning adjacent land which became known as "Smith's Hill". After Hyrum Smith's death Wilbur Yates bought most if not all assets including Smith's Drug Store from Wilbur Yates' widow Ruth Yates Lipman circa 1953 for $1 million dollars making him one of first developers within town limits when permanent housing started becoming available following World War II shortages due tobombing damage throughout Phoenix area caused many businesses closures although some reopened such as: Fergus Bros., Red Rocks Cafe & Grill, American Legion Post 515 (later Troxell’s), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Harry Mantle Hardware Shop etceteras but all closed again during 1975 recession with accompanying stagnationof local economy despite increasing construction activity outside town Limits during late 1970s thru early 1980s although still providing employment for a few hundred residents; however none displaced villagers since majority continued living inside village limitsalbeit with less accessto amenities typicaldowntown residents enjoy such as Job Corps program which provides training opportunitieslocal high school students have accessto while attending community colleges) .

The town became a railroad stop and then a mining and agricultural center before becoming an incorporated city in 1912. Casa Grande is mentioned in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo as part of the lands ceded to Mexico by Edward Suckerby, an American fur trader who had returned from Mexico after seeking refuge on July 12, 1846. On December 17, 1847, President James K. Polk ordered General Philip Sheridan to send forces against Mexican guerrilla leader Antonio López de Santa Anna and his army of 10,000 men near Tucson under command of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock to try to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Santa Anna's force numbered about 2800 soldiers with three cannons and six servants/cattle drivers. On January 6, 1848 Santa Anna attacked several wagon trains transporting supplies for Ulysses S Grant's army stationed at Fort McDowell on Mount Bullock Ridge overlooking Tucson; he killed nine people and injured twenty-one others when his raid failed to achieve its objectives. On February 14th], 1848 Union troops arrived at Camp Carson northeast of Casa Grande while Governor Manuel Gonzales led another force into Tucson under orders from Polk to suppress any contemplated San Miguel revolts which had broken out among cattlemen throughout Sonora during winter months In early March John Wesley Powell made an unsuccessful attempt crossings using canoes over the Mohave River unsuccessfullypelling Lieutenant Colonel George Cooke’s brigade commanded by Captain Samuel P[eacott] across Feb 15th]. After this first failure two more attempts were made but without success until February 25th]. A crossing was attempted with four boats but only two Made it all the way downstream including one that got stuck fast on Mud river bank . Lt Col Cooke’s brigade reached Prescott Marchessault outpost Apr 2nd] after spending 5 days ashore camping near where today’s US 101 crosses Mohave river Colorado Trail junction Marches Across country en route To Window Rock Apr 8th – 9th] Commander Maj Wm Fenton arrived April 10th] only finding abandoned bedouin campsites just off highway not far from present day US 101 intersection
