In the 1800s, Casa Grande was home to some of the most thriving mining communities in Arizona. The area was first mentioned by Mexican traders in 1819. By 1860, there were over a dozen mining towns in and around Casa Grande. One of these towns, San Miguel, became very successful due to its location on the Gold Rush trail. The town quickly grew into a bustling community with many businesses and citizens. However, because of its close proximity to Mexico City and other important cities, San Miguel experienced significant violence and instability throughout its existence. In 1865, an Anglo-American entrepreneur named John Sutter arrived in Casa Grande and began developing the land that would eventually become San Miguel. He hoped to create a new mining district that would be more peaceful and secure than the chaotic areas around him in Mexico City. Unfortunately for Sutter, his expectations did not pans out as he encountered much opposition from local Arizonans who saw his project as invaders taking their land without consideration for the potential contributions it could make to their community. Despite this resistance from locals, Sutter managed to develop his property into one of Arizona's most prosperous regions during the late 1800s and early 1900s. His endeavors helped support numerous families until he finally passed away in 1904 at the age of 96 years old. Today, part of San Miguel designated as a national Historical Park is dedicated specifically to John Sutter's memory.[1] Due to its success during the late 1800s and early 1900s as an agricultural center for Casa Grande (and surrounding villages), San Miguel also experienced significant population growth during those decades which ultimately led to increased crime rates within its borders. Although this increase in crime has been reduced significantly since 1990 when Tucson adopted a citywide Zero Tolerance policy against gun ownership,[2] it still remains an issue that requires continued attention from authorities both here at home[3] and abroad[4].

Casa Grande, Arizona was founded in 1867 by Don Carlos de la Cueva and his wife Maria. The town was named after the beautiful Casa Grande Mountain range which is located in central Arizona. The mountains are responsible for part of the climate here, making it a great place to live. The De la Cueva family had many successful businesses in Casa Grande before they started another ranch near Flagstaff in 1887. The Rancho Santa Fe was one of the largest ranches in the area, with over 1 million acres. They also owned land near Phoenix and Tucson. In 1902, Don Carlos died suddenly and Maria took control of the rancho Santa Fe. She continued to run it until her death in 1957. After her death, it passed through several families before it was bought by George Wuerth who operated it as a cattle farm until 1984 when he donated it to the University of Arizona.
