Casa Grande is a small town in Arizona, United States, located about 30 miles west of Phoenix. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. Casa Grande is first mentioned as an Indian trading post on July 10, 1847 by Lieutenant George A. Smith of the United States Army during his exploration of what is now Arizona Territory. In 1853, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped the region which included Casa Grande and soon after it became a part of Yuma County. The first settler in Casa Grande was Manuel Romero who arrived in 1858 from Santa Fe, New Mexico with his family and built a cabin near today's intersection of Broadway and Green streets. A second settlement was established by John Fenton on August 15, 1861 when he took title to 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day casagrande Road/State Route 921A. By 1865 there were over 20 buildings in the town including frame churches, several stores and two hotels along Broadway Street alone In 1868 Mormon pioneers arrived from Utah via wagon train bound for Prescott Valley in central Arizona Territory The following year General James Hance organized the Pinal County Cavalry to protect settlers against Apache Indians On October 5th 1870 Apache raiders killed Mexican trader José Chavez at Mogollon Wells nearpresent day Casa Grande Hance ordered all residents within 12 miles (19 km) to move or be destroyed Later that year cattle drives brought many more people into what are now Casa Grande and nearby communities including Huachuca City On December 22nd 1870 Francisco Villa invaded Yuma County from adjacent Arizona Territory claiming land grants from President Ulysses S Grant including present day Tucson After months of skirmishes with American forces Villa withdrew to Sonora where he started another rebellion
