After victory over American forces at Yuma on July 21, 1846 Mexican Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Spaniards out of Sonora by January 1, 1847 including La Junta de Santa Cruz del Oro which became Casa Grande after its incorporation into Pima County on February 14th that year. Casa Grande soon became known as one of America's top farming centers with crops like hay, cotton, potatoes, fruits and vegetables being grown here extensively until recent times when much attention has been focused towards cattle ranching operations and golf courses which occupy most or all of the town’s land along with a few scattered buildings dating back to early 19th century pioneer days such as Masonic Lodge #1 & 2 located off Main Street near East Apache Road while another old building still standing - Gadsden Hotel - marks the spot where Prescott A&M College once stood before moving to their present location just south of I-10 about two miles (3 km) southeast from downtown on April 16th 1912 following a offer from President Arthur Garfield for use as a college campus between Peoria Avenue eastward and Springdale Boulevard westward across from Camelback Ranch owned by John Dickey). Casa Grande is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. Casa Grande was founded in 1881 by Manuel Reyes and his family. It became part of Pima County in 1912. The town was established on the site of what is now the Casa Grande Army Depot. The first post office was established in 1881, and the first store opened in 1883. In 1907, a school was built; it served as both a daycare and high school until 1949 when it became a junior college. The post office closed in 1957, but the store continued to serve as a business until 1984. In 1916 Casa GrandeElementary School opened which served grades kindergarten through eighth grade until 1978 when it merged with neighboring Paradise Valley Elementary School to become the current Casa Grande Middle School which serves ninth through twelfth grades. The original land for Rancho San Pedro de la Mesa lay east of present-day Casa Grande and west of present-day Paradise Valley on which were erected many adobe buildings used during early Tucson settlement including mission chapels and government buildings such as fortifications dating back to 1765 Año Santa Fe (1796). In 1881 Manuel Reyes bought about 640 acres (257 hectares) from Juan Bautista Asunción y Sánchez for $2 per acre ($243/km²). With this purchase Manuel reacquired title to Rancho San Pedro de la Mesa from Don Carlos Olivares y Pascual who had conveyed it to him ceded by Spain following its Mexican War victory over Mexico on April 15, 1847 pursuant to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending that war.
