Casa Grande, Arizona is a town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Casa Grande is located on the Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation north of Tucson and east of Phoenix. The first permanent settler in what would become Casa Grande was James Sperry on July 1, 1885. From this date until 1912 there were only transient settlers living in small huts along the banks of the River Gila. In 1912 a larger ranch was purchased by Sam Harkness and it became known as Harkness Ranch Number One (HR1). This ranch included most of present day Casa Grande and much of what is now McDowell County. On November 20th 1912 HR1 sold its remaining interest in the Ranch to Averell Harriman for $2,500 cash which made it official Casa Grande incorporation date August 16th 1913 with a population of just 12 residents including 8 men and 4 women who had come from Tucson to join Harriman's venture. Early residents were primarily miners who were drawn to the rich coal deposits under Gila Ridge Mountains near present day Flagstaff because they could not find any other place to live or work during tough times during World War I when mining companies stopped production due to war restrictions. By 1920 many families had built homes around town center including several schools, churches and businesses that remain today such as The hardware store/gas station/convenience store (now an restaurant), Gold's Gymnasium (later home of PHX Suns basketball team) and Ralston Hardware & Supply Co., Inc., which still has its original building on Fourth Street close by where classes are currently taught in English language immersion programs offered by Mesa Community College adjacent to Apache Junction Elementary School which opened in 1907 adjacent to current Arrowhead Shopping Center next door also operated by Mesa Community College from 1957-1983 when ASU Food Services took over operation for Mesa Community College until 2005 when UA bought back ownership from ASU CASA GRANDE: A History

The town of Casa Grande was founded in 1871, and grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the newly created Arizona–New Mexico border. By 1912, Casa Grande had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1912, Casa Grande was renamed from Panguinola to honor Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1928 with a population of over 200,000 people. However, after years of decline,Casa Grande eventually fell within Mexican control and declined again in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, there is only a small remnant of the original community remaining within Arizona state limits
