The first post office in Casa Grande was established in 1886 and the community name originated from Indian Chief Manuel Castillo's Rancho de Gaviota on what is now Apache Trail Rd. In 1912, the city was incorporated and by 1916 had a population of 350 people. In 1951, when Phoenix annexed Mesa County, portions of Casa Grande were included within this new county. As part of that annexation process, however, some residents voted to leave the city because they felt it had become too close to Mesa City Hall and its cultural amenities didn't merit inclusion within their new municipality. In 1957, another vote to secede from Mesa County resulted in only a few hundred residents voting against incorporation into Phoenix due to fear that their homes would be seized if they left. Phoenix annexed all but 6 square miles (15 km²) of south Tempe before finally annexing all but 1 square mile (2 km²) of north Tempe on November 16th1978 which included much of what is now Casa Grande. All told, over time Phoenix has annexed an area larger than any other city—larger even than Tucson! According to the 2000 census there were 8 contraction wards/towns - Cochise-Douglas-Pima-Maricopa; Cottonwood-East Valley; Globe-Greenacres; Imperial; Lahontan; Mesquite-Gilpin Hillsborough; Northside Village/Albuquerque East Side United Methodist Church Addition Community No 2 & 3 - all towns without villages have no corresponding 2000 cemeteries listed therein -Voters consolidated these three communities into one ward for political reasons according toragon@coxinternetworks dot com Casa Grande currently has a population growth rate well over 2%.
