Casa Grande, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. Casa Grande is bordered by Tombstone to the south and east, Sahuaro Canyon to the north, and Nogales to the west. The first settler in Casa Grande was Francisco Xavier Chavez who arrived in 1867. The town was named after José Antonio Casa Grande, a Mexican general who fought against American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1900, General Antonio Cámpora founded a military academy here which became known as El Centro de la Guerra (The Center of War). Today, El Centro de la Guerra houses several museums including the Museo de las armas de la República Mexicana (Museum of Mexican Arms), as well as an agricultural museum. Casa Grande has experienced numerous changes throughout its history. In 1912 it was destroyed by fire; in 1945 it became a post-apocalyptic settlement; and in 1957 it became an Hispanic community with Spanish surnames only. In 2008Casa Grande hosted both nationally televised debates between Barack Obama and John McCain for their respective bids for president that were covered by Univision America satellite network live from Phoenix Municipal Stadium on October 6th In December 2009 issue of "Newsweek" magazine Casa Grande's economy began to progress following investment totaling $27 million from Tempe Development Authority

The Casa Grande community was founded in 1912 by the Mexicans who had fled Villa Necesita after a shootout. The first white settler, Hiram S. Grant, arrived in 1913 and soon set up a rancho there. In 1916, the U.S. government granted Rancho San Carlos to Grant and his wife, Doris Blythe Grant; this made Casa Grande an Americanized Mexican town. The Grants sold their land to the Pima County Land Commission in 1922 and moved away from Casa Grande to their new home at Pima Lakeshore (later renamed Yuma). However, they continued to live there until her death in 1966. Their son Gilberto died in 1996. The Grants' house is now on display at the Arizona Historical Society in Phoenix. A plaque on the front porch reads: "Hiram S Grant Pioneer of Casa Grande Homestead 1912-1966." The Grants were among the first Latinos to settle in what is now Arizona and are commemorated with a plaque at Mesa Verde National Park which read: "This national park was dedicated as part of an effort to preserve Tombstone National Monument."
The Casa Grande archipelago, commonly called the Arizona Strip, is a series of small islands in the middle of Phoenix Bay. The islands are home to about 1,000 people and are located just upstream of the city's water treatment plant.
