It served as a training camp for American soldiers who were aiding Spanish forces in their war against Apaches. Many of these troops were killed or wounded in action at Camp Verde. In 1922, Camp Verde became an Army post with a population of approximately 1,200 soldiers and civilians. From 1942-1945 it served as both an airfield and POW camp for Japanese Americans who had been living on the reservation since before World War II began. After 1945, CampVerde fell into disrepair until it was purchased by the National Park Service in 1971 and reopened to the public as part of Camp Verde National Historic Site.
In 1868, the United States government founded Camp Verde in order to provide safety for troops stationed at Fort Huachuca. The camp was originally located on the east side of the Verde River and soon became a popular summer spot for Americans and their Apache interpreters. In 1904, Camp Verde was renamed Fort McDowell after General George McDowell, who had fought in Mexican-American War and been an officer in the U.S. Army during World War I. During World War II, Camp Verde served as a training ground for American forces before being turned into a military base. Today, Camp Verde is home to the Arizona National Guard and is open to the public during regular visitor hours.
