There have been many shootings in Camp Verde over the years, but the most significant shooting occurred on November 2nd, 1912. That day, a group of men and boys were playing near the edge of a campfire when they were attacked by five gunmen. Two of the gunmen killed the boys and one shot andkilled the man who was trying to help. The gunman then fled into the night with his victim’s body. The 1912 shooting is still considered one of Arizona’s most heinous crimes. It has left scars on both people and property that continue to this day. The Camp Verde Shooting Museum is dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives that day and helping to prevent similar tragedies from happening in future times.

Camp Verde is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Camp Verde were Arizonans who came overland from Mexico during the Gadsden Purchase in 1848. A post office was established at Verde in 1855, and by 1860 there were thirty-six residents. By 1865 there were five dwellings and one school. In 1867 an act of Congress designated Camp Verde as a military reservation for American Indians under laws passed since the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1870, Colonel James Wickersham organized and led a group of Mexicans who had journeyed down from Apache Junction to Fort Yuma for cattle drives into Apache Territory. When Wickersham realized that he could not drive all his cattle through Apache territory to Tucson because of their hostility toward white men, he turned back and camped near present day Camp Verde on January 6, 1870. A fort was built at this location to protect settlers from Apache raiders; it became known as Fort Yuma after Yuma Cave became available nearby in 1886 when gold seekers discovered rich deposits near Flagstaff Hill Mines on the Cochise River below today's Tempe campus of Arizona State University. After years of negotiations with Apaches and other Native Americans living around Tucson proper, General John Fetterman placed an Indian blockade around Tucson on November 15th 1887 while soldiers under his command marched up San Pedro Road towards Nogales to reopen U.S.-Mexico trade routes following construction of Santa Fe Railway mainline southward from Phoenix across Agua Dulce Valley (the area now occupied by Phoenix). After days of fruitless search throughout much of northern Pima County for traders willing to sell goods beyond Umagua Lake where supplies had been running low due to drought conditions*, Fetterman abandoned plans for a march northward when he learned that troops under Brigadier General Charles Hovey had successfully opened the strategic Santa Fe Trail between Prescott and Tubac via Nogales* This event marks perhaps the most dramatic change in southern Arizona history* From then until World War II almost all travel east or west along Route 66 took place through central Arizona rather than further north past Prescott or elsewhere*. As a result many businesses closed down along Route 66 north of US Highway 89 while others prospered thanks largely to tourism developing adjacent resorts such as Scottsdale Village which straddles both sides of I-10wevers just east of Interstate 10 outside Camp Verde..
