There were so many children there that it was like being at my old friend’s house again! That’s how much I loved it back then- just being around all these happy people who were enjoying themselves. And I vividly remember one particular day when we had a parade through our campgrounds followed by a picnic lunch on some nearby hillsides….it was simply beautiful! Today, we have more than 10 thousand visitors every year who come to explore our beautiful parkland, enjoy our delicious food options including new restaurant openings each month and take part in wholesome activities such as arts & crafts or nature hikes. In addition to providing an enjoyable escape from daily routine for families of all ages, Camp Verde also strengthens relationships among its participants by providing opportunities for positive self-esteem development while learning important life skills along with having fun!

Camp Verde was established in 1916 by the American Expeditionary Forces as a training camp for soldiers during World War I. It served as an Army post until 1943, when it became a military airfield and later an Air Force base. The area now occupied by Camp Verde was first inhabited by the Pima Apaches and their allies, the Navajo, in 1821. At first they traded with the Padres, but eventually became friendly with Spanish settlers. In 1912, Camp Verde became one of three camps used to house 1st Battalion Arizona Infantry Regiment during World War I. After the war ended, units from Arizona were stationed at Fort Sill and then at Camp Verde. In 1942, Camp Verde was converted into an army post and remained that way until 1944 when it became an Air Force Base. In 1946-1947, Camp Verde served as a location for Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in Japan's surrender. From 1951-1973, Camp Verde served as a processing center for refugees fleeing communist China. From 1973-1978 it functioned as a troops barracks before being abandoned again in 1978 due to budget cuts within the Army command structure.
