In 1942, during World War II, Japanese soldiers burned down part of the old post office building due to itses location near Mount Whitney National Park which made it inaccessible to military members stationed there. In 1946, when Camp Verde was first established as a campground by US Forces active duty troops stationed at nearby Fort Huachuca they used horse cavalry patrols instead of motor vehicles because there were no paved roads available then either within or outside the campgrounds boundary limits at that time! Nowadays many people visit Camp Verde every year for their summer vacation or just to enjoy some peace and quiet! With hiking trails ranging from short loops around tranquil lakes to longer routes leading all around the parkland surrounding it – there’s something for everyone here!

Camp Verde was founded in 1912 by the American military officer and scout, George Armstrong Custer. The fortuitous location of Camp Verde on a high plateau made it an ideal location for Basecamp during the Arizona Campaign of World War I. The nearby towns of Obregon and Tombstone were also established during this time period as service and support centers for Camp Verde. In 1916, General John J. Pershing named Camp Verdepositio II, which became Fort Bliss after the installation was completed in 1917. In 1934, Fort Bliss was renamed Fort Arizona to honor General Ben Cockerell who had served as Commandant at Camp Verde until his death in 1932. During World War II, Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Defense under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, visited Fort Apache on July 29th 1944 to observe 85th Infantry Division maneuvers being conducted at the fortification park located adjacent to the Army post site. On October 17th 1944 USS Missouri (BB-39) steamed into Naval Station Phoenix Harbor from San Diego Bay with Rear Admiral Isadore Isaac Katznelson commanding Destroyer Squadron Nine (D9) en route to participate in exercises off California that resulted in damage to several Japanese vessels including one that sunk on September 11th 1945 while under tow from Tokyo port to Yokosuka naval dockyard for repairs. At about 10:00 AEDT Commander Masterman’s ship Logistic Support Group (LSSG) assigned Task Unit 37305 converted Landing Ship Tank LCI(L)? delivered stores and personnel ashore at Ninoy Aquino beach following night operations with demolitions teams using explosives boats landing craft LCT(R)-1 ?and LCI(L)? prior passage through deep water onto sandbars supervised by Commander Task Unit 36255 surfaced at Hagatna beach early morning next day dropped supplies over open water then sailed back out past Abu Sayyaf Islands’ southwestern coast
