In 1912, Camp Verde was the first military reservation in Arizona. The land that now makes up Camp Verde was acquired by the United States government from the Apache tribe during the Mexican-American War. The reservation was established as a cavalry training ground and later became a naval base. The first military target at Camp Verde was an eight foot tall steel giraffe on horseback named “Nag Hammadi”. This target was used to practice artillery fire and provided instruction to American troops stationed at Camp Verde. In 1916, General John Pershing ordered all US forces in Mexico to be disbanded and all their equipment and munitions turned over to Spain. As a result of this order, Camp Verde became inactive for three years. During this time, many of the targets at Camp Verde were destroyed or lost forever due to war damage. In 1921, when World War I ended, the US again occupied Mexico and re-established control over the country’s military resources including CampVerde. Due to its strategic location near Tucson, Arizona,CampVerde soon saw increased activity by both American and Mexican troops during World War II. Between 1941-1945,CampVerde played an important role in hostilities between America and Japan as it hosted airfields used by bomber pilots flying Operation Main Force operations into Japan airspace from Guam Island (then known as Tinian). During Wartime Operations Noemfoor 5 and 6 (1944-1945), Japanese aircraft bombed various targets within 45 miles of Tucson including CampVerdee Naval Air Station; resulting in several fatalities among American servicemen who were stationed there at that time . In 1945 following Germany’s surrender, all US Armed Forces were deactivated across NAU except for those units still garrisoning Japan which were folded into Imperial Japanese Army Field Units.. At that time only about 10% of total US force remained unaccounted for after World War II ending…. [ consequently] most surviving WWII vintage weapons hosted at Presidio County Museum today are USS Missouri Battle Flag guns salvaged from Okinawa beaches during prewar days…]

Today, only a couple of rusting trailers remain standing at the edge of what once was an expansive forest setting in central Tucson. The history of Camp Verde is peppered with moments that have had a lasting impact on American society. For example, during World War II, many Japanese Americans were incarcerated at CampVerde because they were suspected of being Axis spies or war criminals. After the war ended, many these detainees were released and resumed their lives within their own communities but some continued to reside atCampVerde until its closure in 1991. Today there are few remnants left from this time period including the barracks where inmates lived and ate; however there is still evidence remaining that suggests how far America has come since then. One example is the fact that now there are playgrounds and basketball courts available for use by children who visitthe facility as well as surrounding homes which provide snapshots into pre-industrial America through architecture and design elements common today but not seen often enough among older buildings like this one.
