During World War II (1941-1945), Camp Verde served as a training ground for American soldiers arriving at Organ Pipe Canyon Army Airfield just south of town after their march through Phoenix down Camelback Road (U S Highway 16) towards Prescott Valley National Monument NP . Since 1978, Camp Verde has been an affiliate member organization of Scottsdale Canyons County Park which provides day trips and programs for children including hikes along nature trails and rides on horses or ATVs through warm desert climates including Tempe; Peoria; Flagstaff; Winslow; Cottonwood Heights AZ ; Sierra Vista NM ; Deer Valley NM ; Sierra Village NM .
