The population of Camp Verde was 1,864 at the 2010 census. The first guns made in Camp Verde were rifles and shotguns. Gunsmiths from Tucson would come to work on these weapons for the Indian tribes living near Camp Verde. By 1907, most of the gunmen in Camp Verde had acquired firearms. In 1912, the United States federal government purchased land east of the Gila River from the Gila River Indians and began to build Fort Sill on this land. This fort served as a branch Headquarters for American forces during World War I and later became a post office called Fort Sill Post Office Park. In 1949, Congress passed an act that designated certain areas along Highway 64 as conservation areas. These areas included part of present-day Camp Verde which became known as “National Conservation Area #4” due to its location within this area. In 1974, National Park Service workers began working on creating small campsite units throughout what is now National Conservation Area #4 including one called camp number 8 which still stands today within present day Camp Verde boundaries
