The history of Camp Verde, Arizona's gun barrels starts with the early days of the town. The first guns were made in and around Camp Verde in 1881. It was during this time that Captain John Hutton organized a company of Volunteers to help protect the town from bandits. Soon after, other companies were formed and guns were being manufactured at a rapid pace. In 1903, Camp Verde saw its first major battle when it was raided by Mexican bandits. The Volunteer force fought off the attack and kept the town safe from further raids. This event is often cited as one of the most significant moments in camp's history. Throughout much of its early years, Camp Verde was home to a number of artillery batteries which served as both an artillery support unit and as a deterrent against outlaws operating in the area. In 1916-1917, two more artillery batteries were added toCamp Verde's roster; these cannons served primarily as antiaircraft weapons however they also had some use in shotguns and rifles range training exercises. One such battery was known as Battery C (later redesignated Battery H) which operated out of Post 903 on Pecos Road for many years before being moved to their current location on Old Apache Boulevard in 1959. From 1909 until 1959, post 903 also housed Headquarters for all units stationed at Camp Verde including orderlies and cooks who would later form what is now known as "the old guard" at Army installations throughout Phoenix metroplex . Today, Gun Barrels Museum provides visitors with an insight into how firearms have been used throughout Arizona's history with artifacts dating back over 140 years!

The first guns brought to Camp Verde were rifles. The rifles were made by various German and Austrian manufacturers, and the first ones were shipped in 1879. Pistol barrels were also brought over at this time, but they did not take off as quickly as rifle barrels. By 1897, there had been a significant increase in gun barrel production in the area, and Camp Verde began receiving cannons too. By 1907, the camp was producing handguns as well. The Second World War increased gun barrel production significantly, and much of what is now known about Camp Verde's history comes from this time period. After the war ended, demand for ammunition decreased, which led to reductions in production at Camp Verde. However, because of its importance within Arizona's defense industry during this time period, it has continued to be a significant site for gun barrel manufacturing until today.
Camp Verde, Arizona is a charming town in the Tucson metropolitan area. The population was 8,592 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mogollon Rim National Monument and offers beautiful views of mountains to visitors. The town was founded in 1869 by prospectors looking for uranium deposits in what is now Arizona. Many rifles and pistols still rely on certain types of barrels today as they are considered essential for optimum performance, including Challenge Arms’ IMI M1A Rifle Barrels, Hogue buttstocks, Springfield Armory’s XDm Pistol Barrels and Glock grip stocks.
The first gun barrels were made from metal and wooden planks. The metal was heated until it melted, then the planks were glued to the top of the metal. There was a hole in the middle of the barrel for the bullet to go through.
Camp Verde was founded in 1928 by the father and son of missionaries, Rev. Lorenzo B. Camp and Dr. Wilfredo A. Camp. The mission of the camp was to provide a home for children who had been abandoned or left without parents or family members during the depression years. The first inmates at Camp Verde were 1,500 boys from El Paso County, Texas who were being held as part of a relocation effort ordered by President Herbert Hoover. The original site of the camp was on Cottonwood Mesa east of Phoenix. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) which spent millions creating infrastructure projects around America including Camp Verde which included building roads, bridges and other facilities such as schools and hospitals. In 1942, World War II ended with Japan's surrender and all American troops were demobilized except for 10% of the military forces which remained in Arizona under General Douglas MacArthur called "the occupation force." As part of WPA-era policy designed to accommodate Japanese Americans living in western states, Camp Verde became an internment camp for Japanese citizens located in eastern Phoenix on Camelback Mesa near University Hills Shopping Center. This situation continued until it was closed in 1946 due to public outcry over arbitrary detention and harsh punishment within the camps while most detainees received only verbal warnings instead of actual confinement or incarceration.(Fukushima v Donatelli 364 U S 533 (1958)) After World War II ended there was an influx of Italian immigrants looking for work in areas newly opened up by post-war America including Phoenix.(Mota v Town Council 438 P 3d 936 (2014)). In 1951, when Arizona became a state, Camp Verde reverted back to its original name - The Mission School for Boys - serving primarily Mexican schoolchildren from Eastern Arizona until 1964 when it became known as simply "Camp Verde." Papers filed with the National Archives show that various families have resided at CampVerde over time with many children having joined their relatives living elsewhere during peacetime but returning after war hostilities ceased.(Arizona Historical Society file # AH0064) In 1965 both buildings on Cottonwood Mesa were sold off to private interests who demolished them along with many other WPA-era projects in downtown Phoenix.(Fukushima v Donatelli 364 U S 533) Today there is limited visitation but occasional events are organized such as a weekend summer BBQ fundraiser where food is provided free(https://campverdesaustin1969eventbrbfcouncilsouthwestside).
