Camp Verde was a United States military training center located in the Apache Junction region of Arizona from 1898 to 1912. The use of this location led to tension with Mexico City over control of the area and eventually resulted in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which cededlapazote land west of the Cochise Mountains to Mexico while giving Arizona sovereignty over all but 4 miles (6 kilometers) south of that line. In 1912 Camp Verde became an intelligence base under First Lieutenant Albert Custer when he commandeered a airplanes from Douglas Aircraft Company for his own secret aerial reconnaissance missions during World War I against German forces in North Africa and Spain. In 1918 Camp Verde became an American Air Service Training Station (later Wright-Patterson Air Force Base).
