Ammunition history in Camp Verde, Arizona began with the arrival of the U.S. Cavalry in 1885. The cavalry was used for reconnaissance and patrol duty, and the first orders given to General Don Carlos Baca were to purchase high-quality ammunition for their horses. The various armories located throughout Phoenix were not adequate to meet the demand for ammo, so a new armory was constructed on Main Street in 1909. This armory became known as “Armory Park” and continued to serve the military until it closed its doors in 1969. During World War II, many residents of Camp Verde enlisted in the armed forces and hostilities began on September 6th, 1939 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, due to injuries sustained during combat or illness, many residents unable or unwilling to fight returned home soon after Pearl Harbor occurred. In 1945, Camp Verde reverted back to civilian control and activities resumed within the confines of what is now called “Camp Verde State Historic Site” which opened its gates in 1949. Today, ammunition storage remains a prominent part of this site’s history as well as relics from past operations that are still on display inside of the Visitors Center including an Arsenal Train Model 1896 (pictured).

Today’s commercial ammunition comes in many shapes and sizes; from 8mm rounds suitable for handguns/ revolvers into .50BMG Magnum calibers capable of hitting targets up to 1,000 yards away! In 1941, during World War II, it was used as a prisoner-of-war camp for Japanese Americans living in Phoenix. After the war ended, CampVerde reverted back to its original purpose as a military training ground until it closed in 1971. Today it still serves as an open-air museum filled with artifacts from its past
The area around Camp Verde was inhabited for over 10,000 years. The Pueblo of Taos traded goods with the Apache and Navajo people. In 1847, a group of Mormons from Salt Lake City came to Arizona and built the first Mormon settlement in what is now Tucson. The Mormons were forced out of Arizona in 1855, but they continued to visit Camp Verde until their departure.
