Bullhead City is home to the University of Phoenix campus, which has a large student body (many of whom are students at the nearby University of Arizona). Many people in Bullhead City work at the University of Phoenix or other businesses onicken around Phoenix. Additionally, many people in Bullhead City have ancestry from central and eastern Europe. Bullhead City's history can be traced back to 1898 when it was founded as Englishtown by farmers who immigrated from England. From its inception until 1917, Bullhead City was part of Apache County. In that year, however, the county was merged with Pima County and Bullhead Village became part of Pima Township. In 1933, Apache and Pima Counties were combined again and Bullhead Village reverted to its original name - Bullhead City. The University of Phoenix campus began operations in blistering heat on September 16th 1951. At that time, only two buildings - Old Main and North Tower - were operational; all others were either still under construction or had been destroyed during World War II bombing raids which destroyed much of downtownPhoenix including Old Main and North Tower. After years of hard work by numerous individuals and teams within the university-including then President James Ehrlich-the first building opened its doors on October 6th 1952! Today South Tower stands as one ofUA's most iconic symbols in Arizonacampus lore! Today, many people in Bullheadsvillage work outside the school or attend local schools such as Scottsdale Community College or Winterset Elementary School which are all located near downtown Phoenix . Additionally there are several stores located around town including The Grecian , Dun & Bradstreet , Macy's , Sears & Roebuck etc., that cater to locals/students who commute into town for their jobs!
