In 1887, surveyor John Wesley Powell made an exploratory trip through what is now Bullhead City and found rich deposits of gold near present day Jordan Valley. By 1912, the population had reached 10,000 people; however, due to over-population, developers imposed water restrictions on bullheads which caused many mines to close during prohibition era. During World War II, much of Bullhead City was destroyed by firebombing from Japanese planes thought to be targeting military targets throughout the area including nearby Phoenix but also other parts of central Arizona including Tucson and Winslow Junction (). Today only a few buildings remain from pre-war days such as Joe’s Cafeteria (now known as Billy Goat) which operated from 1915-1917 on First Street NE between Second Avenue NW and Third Avenue NW; Superior Hotel (now Golden Nugget); Wacoalot Builders Supply Co.; J&J Tractor Sales Inc.; Eastern Copper Mine; Globe Theatre Company;; Pima Cotton Mill & Storage Co.; Jerome Napping Co.; Western Electric Manufacturing Co., later US Steel Corporation In 1951, after years of planning by Mayor Hiram Sully (), construction began on Scottsdale Municipal Airport which would become Phoenix's first international airport serving all corner malls in Phoenix suburbs with passenger service beginning on September 15th,. The airport opened its doors for business on October 1st with Douglas DC-3's leased for use as chartered flights within/out of Phoenix International Airport
