Bullhead City is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 12,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cochise County. Bullhead City is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1909 by George Witte and other investors who believed that there would be a market for cattle in the area because of its warm climate and good soil. In 1912, Bullhead City became the first incorporated municipality in Cochise County and served as its government until it was abolished by Arizona Statehood Act on November 16, 1912. Bullhead City's history can be traced back to 1909 when George Witte established Bullhead City Cattle Company with $5,000 from his own money and then donated 1,500 acres (460 hectares) of land to Cochise County as their new county seat. The company operated a small trading post near where it still stands today which handled livestock supplies and sales until 1931 when it burned down. In 1907, two men named Harry Haggerty and John Stoneman purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of town from James Ahern for $10 per acre ($405 per hectare). This initial property included what is now downtown Bullhead City along with present-day portions south of SR-1010 east to SR-1014 west; parts northward were included in what are now Salt River Fields Park and Mesa Verde National Park areas (see map below). He named his land "Bullhead" after the Donner River which he saw near his home in California while exploring that state's central region. The Donner Party, consisting of 22 men including James McCarty and John Cushing, set out from Fort Bridgwater on May 14, 1846 to explore what lay beyond the Great Basin of California. They first reachedovierville about 20 miles east of today's Bullhead City when they were met by Chief Ralston Wright and his party who had been following them for weeks In late summer of 1847 they discovered goldfields at Sutter's Mill (near present-day Glendale) and decided to return westward rather than continue downriver which would have required crossing over numerous rivers and water ways full of danger for their journey carrying so much treasure with them In November 1848 Henniker sold all his holdings adjacent to the current town site to George Morrison who founded Phoenix on January 6th, 1849 Bullhead City was established as a small post office under Morrison's name on February 3rd mail service arrived here on March 1st A store built by Wm Fiske opened here on February 4th . By 1860 there were twenty two families living in what is now downtown Bullhead City .
