Bullhead City, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Bullhead City was founded on October 16, 1912 by George Washington Mayo and his wife Martha Mayo. George Mayo had been born in 1859 in what is now Bullhead City and arrived there with his family on horseback from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico Territory on July 6, 1912. From 1913 to 1919, Bullhead City was the site of a United States Militaryisal School for Boys which prepared American boys for military service during World War I. The post office at Bullhead City was established on December 13, 1916. In 1924, the city became an incorporated town under the name of Phoenixville but it reverted back to its original name after only two years when Arizona State University decided that it should be called Scottsdale rather than Phoenixville because Scottsdale had more relevance as a university town given its proximity to Tempe and other campuses statewide. In 1990 the city approved plans to change its name again to Scottsdale because of its location within Maricopa County and also because many people living in Phoenix thought that it would be less confusing since both Scottsdale and Phoenix were county-level jurisdictions instead of city-level ones like Tucson or Mesa which are constituent parts of larger counties such as Pinal or Aztec Hills. The vote took place despite objections from some residents who felt that their community's unique moniker would remain even if it ceased to be an incorporated municipality; however incorporation resumed six months later whenScottsdale voters passed a resolution approving incorporation without changing their minds about the city's nickname (despite not having received any formal notice). As an incorporated municipality, Bullhead City enjoyed full municipal governance including all aspects from public education through zoning regulations through law enforcement while also being able to levy taxes levied by Pinal County government just like any other municipality within that county; however this privilege ended upon annexation into Maricopa County effective January 1st 2009 due to differences between how those municipalities operate: as municipalities within Maricopa County they are subject only to state laws while those annexed into Maricopa County are also subject to local laws enacted by county officials pursuant thereto including ordinances related specifically to transportation which have direct impact on local businesses located within those annexed communities (e.g., bans on building taller structures than 50 feet [15 meters] above ground level]; however theselaws do not apply extraterritorially outsideMaricopa Countyshcore areas such as downtownPhoenix) In 2002 Scottsdale enacted ordinance No 01-2002 establishing "Bullheads" as a strip mall adjacent directly east of I-10 Exit 214 near Loop 101 southbound exit ramp providing access north onto Loop 101 from Interstate 10 concurrent with resurfacing both freeway lanes adjacent LBH Drilling & SupplyCenter lot immediately west off Loop 101 just past intersection with Nuevo Casa Rd.; however no development has yet taken place due primarilyto lackof interest among developers resultingin high ratesfor singlefamily homes along major thoroughfares close enough for shopping convenience although one development proposal has been submitted for approval by the city staff pending review
Bullhead City was founded in 1907 by George Bird Grinnell and his family. The city grew rapidly due to the booming natural resources of the area. In 1925, Grinnell donated land to the city for a public square, which became known as Grinnell Square. The city's first mayor was W. H. Buchanan.
